Welcome to the Breedcow and Dynama Wiki
Welcome to the step-by-step guide and user help manual for the Breedcow and Dynama herd budgeting software package! This software is used to assess choices for the management of beef cattle herds run under extensive conditions. It is not an accounting package or a paddock records package and does not record individual animals. The term “herd budgeting” is used to emphasise the central role of herd dynamics in cattle enterprise budgeting.
Upon registering or logging on, navigate to the Tools page where the suite of programs is displayed. For detailed user-manual information on each of these programs, as well as definitions and handy tips, please follow the relevant links below.
Herd Modelling Software
Breedcow+
Breedcow+ compares the likely profitability of the herd under different management or turnoff systems. Breedcow+ is a steady state herd model that generates its own structure around a starting number of weaner heifers retained. The Breedcow+ program can quickly determine the best strategies for a beef breeding herd run under extensive conditions. The outputs of the Breedcow+ program are herd structure, herd value, and gross margins.
Breedcow Lite (NEW)
Breedcow Lite is the simplified version of the traditional Breedcow. Requiring 13 inputs, it creates a Breedcow+ file for you without the manual entry of 100's of inputs.
Dynama+
Dynama+ is a ten-year budgeting program that usually starts with the current herd numbers and structure and then makes forward projections of stock numbers, sales, cash flow, net income, debt and net worth.
Investan
Investan evaluates investments in herd or property improvement to determine the rate of return on extra capital, the number of years to breakeven and the peak debt.
Cattle Trading Software
Bullocks
Bullocks is a simple decision-making tool that calculates the gross margin of a trading enterprise. The Bullocks program focuses on selecting the most profitable turnover cattle but it may be also used to evaluate forced sales options or whether to keep the slow steers until they finish or sell them early.
Dry Cattle Trading
Dry Cattle Trading is an extension of the Bullocks tool, requiring further inputs for variable costs.
Cowtrade
Cowtrade also calculates the gross margin but is specifically for cows and calves. The Cowtrade program is often used when seasons and prices are out of line with long term expectations. It can be used to set sales priorities when drought or financial crisis requires abnormal sales or when deciding how far to sell into the heifers after pregnancy diagnosis. Cowtrade can also be used to assess breeder purchase options.
Calculators
Splitsal
Splitsal can be used to estimate the weights and proportions of leads and tails in a mob of cattle. This can be used for male turnoff over two seasons or for estimating numbers and weights from the tail or lead of a group of heifers or steers.
Growth Path
Growth Path can be used to model the seasonality of liveweight gains for steers and heifers.
LWG Calculator
The Liveweight Gain Calculator can be used to estimate live weight gains in dry cattle on known nutrition.
